Childrens Dental Care

Children’s Dental Health

At Fernvale Dental, we aim to help teach you the best strategies to keep your family's teeth in great shape. It's always important to remember that prevention is better than a cure, and with this in mind we keep a strong focus on preventative advice during our regular six monthly checkups. Using the latest in digital dental technology, your family can be shown exactly what they are doing right, or wrong, and where some changes should be made.

To assist in a lifetime of healthy smiles, it's paramount to introduce your children to professional dental care from an early age, even as young as 2 or 3. Regular check-ups from this age will help them to feel comfortable in the dental chair, and help create a friendly relationship with the dentist and dental nurse.

Dental Care For Kids

It is recommended that children brush twice a day using a small, soft toothbrush with a pea sized amount of toothpaste. From about three years of age, they should be encouraged to do some of the tooth brushing themselves under supervision so that they develop these important skills. Adult supervision in teeth cleaning is important until they are at least 6 or 7 years old. Children should be encouraged to eat healthy snacks whilst limiting sweet sugary foods, especially between meals.

Drinking water rather than sugary drinks when thirsty is also highly recommended.

A few facts you may not know about dental care for children:

  • Baby teeth (primary teeth) are important for both learning to speak and establishing a healthy diet
  • These teeth also keep the correct spaces for the permanent (adult) teeth tgo move into later on
  • Prolonged thumb sucking habits can cause the front teeth a surrounding bone to be pushed out of shape. If the habit continues into primary school then it can cause developmental abnormalities in the future. Some form of intervention for thumb sucking is recommended.

Fissure Sealants

In some cases, we may recommend fissure sealants for children. Fissure sealants are used to prevent decay in the deep grooves of your back teeth. Sometimes these fissures can be so narrow that not even a toothbrush bristle can get in to clean it properly. Fissure sealants are a preventative treatment, and are quick and painless.

Kids and the Dentist

If your child is anxious about visiting the dentist then it is important that we all work together to make it a pleasant experience. We like to start with the simple things on their first visit, which is why it is so important to bring your children to the dentist for a routine check-up before problems arise. Our friendly staff will try their very best to put your children at ease and make them comfortable.
