Dental implant surgery is a procedure in which damaged or missing teeth are
completely replaced with artificial teeth, with the same appearance and
functionality as real ones. Dental implant surgery is a common alternative to bridgework or ill-fitting dentures.

The process of the dental implant surgery spans over a period of months in several stages, and is dependent on the condition of your jawbone.

Why it's done

Rather than using adjacent teeth as anchors or resting on the gum line, implants are surgically installed into the jawbone, serving as the roots of missing teeth. The implants will eventually integrate with the jawbone as they are made from titanium.

Dental implants may be the right choice for you if you:

  • Have one or more missing teeth
  • Have a jawbone that's reached full growth
  • Have adequate bone to secure the implants, or are able to have a bone graft
  • Have healthy oral tissue
  • Don't have health conditions that will affect bone healing
  • Are unable or unwilling to wear dentures
  • Want to fix speech impediments caused by missing teeth
  • Are willing to commit time to the full process of an implant

What can you expect from the procedure?

The entire process involved with dental implants usually will last three to nine months, and sometimes longer depending on your jaw. The majority of this time is spent healing and waiting for the new bone growth in the jaw.

The initial part of the process is to implant the titanium into the jawbone. After a specific healing period elapses, an abutment is fitted onto the cylinder. Finally, artificial teeth are then attached to the abutment, giving the appearance of a real tooth.
