Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth have generally been known to erupt between the ages of 17 and 21,presenting problems and discomfort if there is a lack of room, or erupting at an angle.

Any concerns with your wisdom teeth should be followed up with your dentist, as problematic wisdom teeth have been known to cause significant complications, including:

  • Recurrent infections associated with the site causing other generalised health issues and toothache
  • In severe cases, spreading of this infection can constrict airways causing breathing difficulties
  • Constant bad breath as a result of recurrent infection
  • Inability to clean other teeth in the area thoroughly. Often the angle of the impacted wisdom teeth can prevent proper cleaning of adjacent teeth, which then causes these teeth to become decayed. In severe cases they can be so badly damaged that extraction becomes the only option

Extraction later on in life will increase the difficulty for your body to heal, hence the procedure is more effective sooner rather than later.

For a dentist to better plan for an extraction procedure, a full OPG x-ray will need to be taken of your mouth. Due to the location of the wisdom teeth (back of the jaw), the procedure is more complex than removing surrounding teeth. In some cases your dentist may refer you to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to ensure the best possible results.

At Fernvale Dental, we offer a range of treatments for dealing with any wisdom teeth problems you or your family might have.

In-Surgery Alternatives

For the convenience of our patients, we have arranged for a dentist with a special interest in oral surgery to visit our practice on occassion. This is an affordable alternative to expensive day surgery conducted at a private hospital. If you would prefer to be asleep for the procedure, we would gladly assist you in organising this.
