Does your child need a dentist recommended mouthguard for sports?
Mouthguards are special devices made out of rubber and custom designed to protect front teeth and lips from damage. This can help prevent any expensive dental work which can result from mouth injuries such as broken teeth.
Custom made guards are much more comfortable than the equivalent from a chemist and you can also choose from a wide range of colours!
Which sports should I use a mouthguard for?
They should be worn when playing:
- Football (Rugby League, Rugby Union)
- Hockey
- Netball
- Basketball
- Skateboarding
A dentist custom made mouthguard will also reduce or event totally prevent the impact of injuries to the head and jaw. This means you have much less risk of injuries like a broken jaw or even brain damage.
How do I get a custom mouthguard from a dentist?
It’s very easy to get a custom mouthguard from your dentist – all you need is to book a quick appointment where an impression of the top teeth is taken. After that the impression is sent away for the mouthguard to be made, which generally takes around 1-2 weeks – so it’s good to plan ahead at the start of the school year!
Do I need to replace my custom mouthguard?
Yes. Just as your children will outgrow their clothes, they will outgrow their mouth guard as well. Please bring it along to your regular check-up appointments and your dentist will let you know when a new one is needed.
