Children’s Dentistry
At Fernvale Dental, our primary focus is helping children establish a positive relationship with their teeth. Many dental issues that arise later in life, such as tooth decay and gum disease, can be avoided by establishing good habits early. This is why it’s vital that your child is introduced to our friendly dentists from a young age.

Creating a fun experience for your child at the dentist
Unfortunately, many of us feel nervous or anxious when visiting the dentist, which can harm our dental health. This is why we place such a high priority on creating a fun and positive experience for a child’s first trip to the dentist, so they don’t grow up fearing the dental chair.
One of the best ways to do this is to schedule the child’s first dental visit early in their development, before any problems with their teeth or gums arise. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends that children first see a dentist when baby teeth appear or when they turn one, whichever occurs first.
It’s important to introduce your child to the dentist for a routine check-up; this allows us to address the basics on their first visit. We use the initial appointment to establish a relationship based on trust and positivity and to familiarise them with dentistry in a fun, playful way.
They even get to play with the controls and go for a ride in the dental chair! They can also choose a present from the treasure chest at the end of the appointment. It’s all about making them feel calm and relaxed and building a friendly relationship with the dentist and their assistant.
Medicare Child Dental Benefits Scheme
Under the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Scheme, children between the ages of two and 17 are entitled to $1,158 in free dental benefits over two calendar years. At Fernvale Dental, we have chosen to bulk-bill eligible patients under the scheme, so there are no out-of-pocket expenses up to the $1,158 limit.
Children’s Dental Emergencies
Kids are active and always on the go. Accidents can and will happen, and occasionally a tooth can get chipped or knocked out. Don’t panic. We have a step-by-step guide on what to do if a tooth is knocked out, and we’re also available on weekdays and weekends for emergency dental treatments. We’ll always be there to address your child’s dental emergencies.
Common children’s dental treatments

Fissure sealants
Sometimes, bacteria can get into a tooth’s fissures or grooves and begin the process of tooth decay. Sealants are thin plastic coatings that prevent this from happening, and applying them is a quick and painless procedure.

Fillings and crowns
Cavities can occur, sometimes no matter how vigilant we are with our oral hygiene. If you suspect your child has developed a cavity, make sure you bring them in as soon as you can. The quicker we can attend to it, the less damage and decay there’ll be. Your child will have a healthy smile in no time.

Mouthguards
Children can get involved in sport from an early age. To protect their beautiful smiles, we recommend the use of a custom-fitted mouthguard, which is the best way to prevent chips and knocked out teeth from collisions. Talk to us about them today.
