Whitening Options Available

Your smile is an important feature of who you are! Stained and discoloured teeth can make you frustrated, fortunately though there are a few methods to whiten your smile. There are two main ways available for whitening your teeth:

  1. Take home personalized kits from your dentist
  2. Over-The-Counter products from grocery shops or chemist shops

Over-the-Counter Whitening

Over-the-counter kits from the grocery shop contain far less concentrated materials than what a dentist could prescribe for you. Which means you are going to have to use these kits longer and more frequently to get noticeable results and they will not last as long either.

In-Chair Whitening

The whitening products that dentists use are more concentrated in comparison, designed to deliver faster and longer lasting results for you. There are two options to choose for whitening at the dentist, take home and in chair treatment.

At Fernvale Dental we provide take home personalized teeth whitening kits. In order to whiten your teeth at home we will need to take an impression using a special putty mix so we can make whitening trays that will align perfectly with your individual teeth. These trays will be crafted by a technician, so a second visit will be needed to pick up your personalized trays and whitening gel. The gel is different to what you find over-the-counter, it has a higher concentration of whitening solution and required refrigeration. The whitening process is simple, spread the whitening gel onto the trays and fit the trays up over your teeth and leave on for about 30-50 minutes. The kit will have enough gel to complete several treatments so you can achieve your teeth whitening goals!

The best whitening method

The best method for teeth whitening is to see your dentist. It is the safest and most effective way to achieve the whitening results you wish for.

The dentist takes your oral health into consideration prior to starting any treatment. They will first determine the cause of the discoloration, it could be tooth decay or other underlying factors. In these cases over-the-counter products would be seriously ineffective, and could cause further damage or pain that could have been detected and easily avoided by an experienced dentist. It’s always best to have the full picture of your oral health before starting any teeth whitening treatments.
