Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are the best way to strengthen and protect a tooth after it has been significantly compromised (e.g., large amount of decay removed). Essentially, a crown is a custom-made porcelain ‘helmet’ made to look just like your natural teeth so it’s indistinguishable once fitted.
Your dentist will fit the crown over the compromised tooth to restore its integrity. The crown seals off the tooth from the rest of the mouth in order to reduce the risk of infection and improve the tooth’s longevity.
If you would like to discuss your dental crown requirements, phone the friendly Fernvale Dental team on 07 5427 0880 or book online today.
Why might a dental crown be recommended?
Dental crowns can be appropriate solutions for a number of issues:
Protect a tooth after root canal therapy
Provide an excellent anchor for a bridge
Restore a dental implant post-surgery
Cover discoloured or chipped teeth
Same Day Crowns
Experience the convenience of same day dental crowns with our advanced CEREC technology. In just a single visit, we create and permanently fit your new crown without the hassle of messy impressions, temporary crowns, or waiting for the final result.
How do same day crowns work?
- Dental Imaging: Our digital scanner captures a precise image of your tooth.
- 3D Digital Modelling: A digital model of your teeth and the new crown is generated.
- In-House Fabrication: We craft the crown from a ceramic block right in our practice using our milling machine
- Immediate Placement: Your custom-made crown is expertly placed by your dentist, all in one convenient appointment.
Two Visit Crowns
Sometimes your dentist may recommend getting your new crown made in a specialised dental lab rather than using our in-house CEREC technology.
Our in-house machine only makes dental porcelain crowns. If your dentist determines your tooth requires a crown made of a different material, such as gold or zirconia, a lab is required.
What is the process for two visit crowns?
Your dentist will prepare the tooth for your new crown at your first appointment. Once the tooth has been properly shaped, a 3D scan is taken of the area using our digital scanner. Digital scanning provides precise results and a streamlined, comfortable patient experience without the mess and discomfort of traditional dental impressions. The digital impression is sent to our dental lab, where specialised technicians create your custom-made crown.
At the end of your initial appointment, a temporary crown will be placed over the prepared tooth to protect it until your permanent crown is ready.
The dentist will replace the temporary crown with your permanent one at your second appointment. The dentist will take time to ensure the new crown is a perfect fit, checking your jaw alignment and bite.
Is a dental crown procedure painful?
During the dental crown fitting, local anaesthetic is used to numb the mouth so that no pain is felt. After the appointment, once the anaesthetic has worn off, some soreness may be felt in the gum around where the crown was placed, but over-the-counter medication should be enough to alleviate any discomfort.
Why do we use porcelain dental crowns?
Porcelain is a type of ceramic, and it’s a very good material for dental procedures as it can be moulded to the shape of your natural teeth and look virtually identical. It can also be made to mimic the tone and translucency of dental ivory, which is why it’s a great choice for prominent front teeth, though equally appropriate for large molars.
Porcelain is also a bio-compatible material, which simply means it won’t cause any gum irritation or allergic reaction. A porcelain crown feels and looks like a natural tooth.
How long do dental crowns last?
Unlike natural teeth, a dental crown won’t last forever, with an average lifespan of up to 15 years. It’s important to keep in mind that the tooth underneath the crown can still get infected and decay if not cared for adequately.
Much like natural teeth, a dental crown’s longevity depends on good oral hygiene, which involves making a habit out of regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing, as well as six-monthly check-ups with one of our friendly dentists.
