Why do I need teeth whitening?
There are many reasons why our teeth discolour or stain throughout our life. The most common causes are:
The consumption of strongly coloured beverages, such as coffee, tea and red wine, and chocolate and berries.
Smoking
Exposure to some kinds of antibiotics at a young age
Natural staining and discolouration as a result of age and everyday use
What are the teeth whitening options?
If your teeth make you feel self-conscious, the first step is giving our clinic a call and making an appointment with one of our friendly dentists. We’ll assess your teeth and talk with you about your desired outcomes and then present you with a treatment plan suited to you and your budget.
Teeth whitening products are made up of medicants that attach to and break down the bonds that cause tooth discolouration and staining. These medicants are made up of either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, depending on the brand. The result is a whiter, brighter smile.
There are over-the-counter home teeth whitening products that you can use which are made up of a less concentrated version of what our dentists use in the clinic. These products need to be applied daily for a certain time before they have any effect, and it’s important that you follow their instructions carefully. Even if you choose to do teeth whitening at home, we still recommend that you see one of our dentists beforehand; prior to the use of any teeth whitening products, it’s important that the underlying cause of your tooth discolouration is discovered and treated if necessary, otherwise teeth whitening may prove futile.
We also offer professional teeth whitening services in the clinic, at the hands of one of our dentists. An in-chair treatment requires only one visit and the results are generally noticed immediately.
Tooth whitening is most effective when applied to clean and healthy surfaces so, even if you choose to do it at home, you should still make an appointment with one of our dentists beforehand for a general check-up. Discomfort and sensitivity are possible during the treatment; if this is a concern for you, please discuss it with your dentist at your appointment.
What if teeth whitening isn’t for me?
Teeth whitening isn’t the most appropriate treatment for discolouration and staining in every situation, which is why you should always consult a dentist prior to any treatment. The cause of the discolouration should always be determined and, if necessary, treated before any other steps are taken.
Certain types of staining do not respond overly well to teeth whitening. For instance, yellow stains can be treated quite effectively, whereas greyish surface stains are more stubborn.
