Tooth whitening is very popular in 2019 but there’s also a lot of misinformation and snake oil out there – let’s take a look at what to do if you want to give your teeth a bit of a touch-up!

Teeth Whitening – Is it safe and how well does it work?

Tooth whitening is generally quite effective with regards to lightening tooth colour, but there are several factors to consider before getting started.

The process generally works by using chemicals to attack the stains forming on and within the structure of your teeth.  As such, this process can irritate the nerve, and so we try to make sure the nerve of the tooth is sealed as much as humanly possible. The team at Fernvale like to undertake a ‘tooth exam’ before starting teeth whitening. This exam will check that the nerves of your teeth are well insulated. As long as this is the case, they’ll be able to defend any short or long term effects of the whitening product.

Some stains can’t be fixed with whitening products. Thinning of enamel (the hard outer layer of your teeth) can result in a darkening of your teeth to the more ‘natural’ yellow dentine layer is visible.

Another issue is that the enamal formation can be a little idiosyncratic and lead to certain stains, spots and bands on enamel. Tooth whitening products aren’t as effective in removing these sorts of stains and bands. With that said, we do have other options available and would be happy to discuss them with you at the practice!

Common stains tooth whitening will do really well against are those from food and drinks like black tea, coffee or red wine. Whitening products are extremely effective for stains like this. If done in conjunction with a careful oral hygiene regime to ensure your teeth stay white, this can be a great way to get your smile sparkling again!
